Interworking of Networks
This work area investigates the interworking of networks to provide delivery of a wide range of services in a spectrally efficient and secure & reliable manner. The services envisaged range from point-to-point to multicast and all the way to broadcast and even interactive broadcasting services; a range that has never been before offered to a mobile user through one network and one type of terminal and one subscription.
Interworking implies the co-operation and assistance of network functionality, rather than duplication of networks.
Spectral Efficiency aims at choosing the most appropriate radio access delivery mechanisms.
Secure & reliable implies achieving a more stable quality of service, higher service availability and optimum system capacity through appropriate use of network services and capabilities.
Some of the research problems being addressed are:
criteria for selection of appropriate delivery mode: unicast, multicast or broadcast
criteria for selection of appropriate radio access technology for service delivery
vertical handover between different sub-networks
simultaneous use of sub-networks for interactive services
load balancing criteria and algorithms
end-to-end homogenous network security layer for access to network and to service
